Methods Used / Teacher’s Philosophy
I get asked a lot about the method books/teaching methods I use and the most important part of this equation to me is the needs of the student. There are certain methods that are well known ( Suzuki, for instance) that offer one style of teaching however that particular series often creates more challenges for my students because it is mainly repertoire based with less emphasis on scales. I like to use books alongside the suzuki method that cover scales, and repetitive finger patterns. I encourage shorter, daily focused practice sessions (20 minutes to start) with clear goals. New pieces should be around 10% above a student’s ability level. I also use many traditional method books alongside solo pieces and I am a believer in supporting the local school orchestras by setting aside lesson time to work on school music. I am a San Diego Youth Symphony Teaching Artist and preparing this music is also important to me because in many cases, it’s harder than solo music.
